The Math Behind the 2000 Census Apportionment of Representatives

Notes:

15 January 2001 Correction: The Total Apportionment Population has been corrected to read 281,424,177. It was previously posted incorrectly.

6 March 2002 - The case of Utah v. Evans - in which the State of UTAH is in a dispute with the State of NORTH CAROLINA over which State should get the 435th seat in the House of Representatives as a result of the 2000 Census.

"Evans" being Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans (the conducting of the 2000 Census having been under the auspices of the Department of Commerce).

The oral argument was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday 27 March 2002.

20 June 2002 - The Supreme Court decided in favor of North Carolina in the case of Utah v. Evans. North Carolina, as originally determined by the Census Bureau, will receive the 435th seat. Utah will elect 3 Congressmen and North Carolina will elect 13 Congressmen in 2002 through 2010. (Had Utah's claim been upheld by the Nation's highest court, Utah would have elected 4 Congressmen and North Carolina only 12 in 2002 through 2010). Click here for additional details on Utah v. Evans.
