The delegate selection processes herein was updated 14 April 2011 per the MICHIGAN DELEGATE SELECTION PLAN FOR THE 2012 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION ISSUED BY THE MICHIGAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY - MAY 14, 2011 (AS AMENDED AUGUST 9, 2011).

Candidate Listing - PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY - February 28, 2012.

Starting on Tuesday 20 March 2012, a 15% pledged delegate bonus is awarded when clusters of 3 or more neighboring states begin on the same date.

The state should receive a 20% pledged delegate bonus for starting in Stage III (May and June).


On 12 April 2011, Representative Paul Scott (Republican) introduced House Bill 4535 (2011). The bill changes the Presidential Primary from the fourth Tuesday in February to the last Tuesday in January.

On 24 August 2011, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (Republican) introduced Senate Bill 0584. The bill use a panel appointed by the Governor, state Senate Majority Leader, and state House Speaker to, no later than 1 October 2011, select a date for the Presidential Primary. That date can be no earlier than 28 February and no later than 6 March 2012. If the panel does not act, the date would be 28 February 2012. The bill was amended by the state Senate to hold the primary "on the fourth Tuesday in February" which is 28 February 2012.


   

Tuesday 28 February 2012: Michigan non-binding Presidential Primary. The primary has no effect on delegate allocation.

Participation in Michigan's delegate selection process is open to all voters who wish to participate as Democrats.

To accommodate those whose religious convictions prevent them from participating in person at the Saturday caucuses, the party will provide special ballots in advance. These ballots must be returned no later than 5 pm Friday 4 May 2012.

Saturday 5 May 2012: 183 of 203 delegates to the Democratic National Convention are pledged to presidential contenders based on the results of the preferences expressed in today's Presidential Caucuses. Caucuses begin at 11 am EDT.

A mandatory 15 percent threshold is required in order for a presidential contender to be allocated National Convention delegates at either the congressional district or statewide level.

  • 122 district delegates are to be allocated proportionally to presidential contenders based on the results in each of the State's 15 congressional districts. (from August 2011)

Participation in Michigan’s delegate selection process is open to all voters who wish to participate as Democrats. Voters will declare that they are participating as Democrats before they receive their ballots.

 

Saturday 2 June 2012: District Conventions. District-level delegates are elected according to the results of the caucuses.

 

Saturday 23 June 2012: State Central Committee Meeting.

41 At-Large and 20 Pledged PLEO delegates are elected according to the results of the caucuses.

The remaining 20 National Convention delegates consist of

  • 20 Unpledged PLEO delegates:
    • 12 Democratic National Committee members.
    • 8 Members of Congress (2 Senators and 6 Representatives).
    • 0 Governors.
    • 0 Distinguished Party Leaders.

These 20 delegates and will go to the Democratic National Convention officially "Unpledged".
