Washington State’s Top Two Primary
Washington gained 1 U.S. House seat in the 2010 Census and will elected 10 Representatives in 2012. On 7 January 2011, Secretary of State Sam Reed asked state lawmakers to move the state's Primary from the third Tuesday in August to the first Tuesday in August to help the state can comply with a federal law requiring overseas military ballots to be mailed at least 45 days before the General Election. The bills are HB 1080 (prefiled on 7 January 2011) and SB 5171. The legislature was requested to save $10 million by cancelling the 2012 Washington Presidential Primary. The legislature passed and Governor Christine "Chris" Gregoire signed SB 5119 on 12 May 2011 cancelling the primary. |

"FEC" indicates the Federal Election Commission (FEC) Campaign Finance Summary. When available, we post each candidate's FEC identification number, the date of their most recently filed Report of Receipts and Disbursements, their "Tot" [Total Receipts (contributions received or what came in: FEC Form 3, Line 16, Column B)] and their "Dsb" [Total Disbursements (expenditures or what was spent: FEC Form 3, Line 23, Column B)]. A link is provided to the Federal Election Commission's Summary Report for those who might wish to explore the details. If a candidate raises or spends $5,000 or less, he or she is not subject to FEC reporting requirements. |
