Tuesday 28 August 2007Mississippi Auditor of Public Accounts Runoff Election Since no candidate received 50% of the vote in the 7 August 2007 Democratic Primary, The top two vote getters, Mike Sumrall (47%) and Todd Brand (36%) proceeded to a 28 August runoff. Mike Sumrall won the Democratic nomination for Auditor of Public Accounts with 53% of the vote. MISSISSIPPI Runoff Election results from a media source Tuesday 7 August 2007MISSISSIPPI State PRIMARYMISSISSIPPI Primary results from a media source If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the first primary, the 2 candidates who receive the highest popular vote shall advance to a second primary (that is, a runoff) on Tuesday 28 August 2007, and the candidate who leads in this second primary shall be nominated as a Party's candidate for the office.
To win a statewide office, a candidate must receive 50% or more of the vote and carry 62 or more of the 122 House districts. Otherwise, the House chooses between the top two vote-getters in January. |

On 31 December 2007 Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour Wicker announced his choice for former Senator Lott's replacement to be Congressman Roger Wicker (Congressman CD 1), 56. Senator Wicker will serve until a 4 November 2008 special election is held. | |||||

On 17 March 2007, the state Democratic Executive Committee denied ballot certification to Insurance Commissioner George Dale because the committee "questioned his loyalty to the Democratic Party" because Mr. Dale publicly supported President Bush's re-election in 2004. Mr. Dale filed a lawsuit and at a 27 April 2007 hearing stated he desired to appear on the ballot as an Independent candidate. On 14 May 2007 Calhoun County Circuit Judge Henry Lackey ordered that Mr. Dale's name appear on the primary ballot as a Democrat. Media Article. |
