29 January 2013: The U.S. Senate confirms Senator John F. Kerry (Democratic) as Secretary of State, 94-3. Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick (Democratic) will to fill the vacant Senate Seat with an interim appointment. In addition, the Governor will call a Special Primary for Tuesday 30 April 2013 and a Special Election for Tuesday 25 June 2013. 30 January 2013: Governor Deval L. Patrick (Democratic) selects William "Mo" Cowan (Democratic) as interim Senator. The interim will fill the Seat until the Special Election. The winner of the Special Election will fill the Seat until the 4 November 2014 General Election.
