Tommy G. Thompson as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Lieutenant Governor Scott McCallum will become Governor of WISCONSIN upon Tommy Thompson's resignation.
The Bush Administration. The U.S. Senate met in a brief session the afternoon of 20 January 2001, the first day of George W. Bush's Presidency, and approved- viva voce (i.e. by voice vote)- 7 of his 14 Cabinet appointments:
News: Representative Bud Shuster, (Republican, Pennsylvania Congressional District 9) announced that he will retire on 31 January 2001. The Congressman has served 14 terms in the House. The Congressman cited health reasons for his decision.

News: We extend our condolences to the family and friends of former California Senator Alan Cranston, 86, who passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2000.
News: George W. Bush has resigned his Governorship of Texas to take the office of President of the United States. Lt. Gov. Rick Perry will replace him as Governor of Texas.
Representative Bruce F. Vento (4th Congressional District Minnesota) passed away on October 10, 2000. Representative Vento was born October 7, 1940 and has held this seat since he was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on November 2, 1976. This house seat is vacant pending the November 7, 2000 election. Mr. Vento was not a candidate for reelection.
The House now has 222 Republicans, 209 Democrats, 2 Independents, and 2 vacant offices.
