If no candidate receives 30% of the vote in the North Carolina regular or special primary, the two leading candidates proceed to a run off. Unopposed candidates do not appear on the primary ballot. The runoff is held 7 weeks after the primary when the run-off is required for only statewide offices or 10 weeks after the primary when the run-off is required a Federal office. The primary is for the Constitution, Democratic, Green, Libertarian, and Republican parties. Write-ins are allowed in the general election, but are not permitted in primary elections.
